Following the fall of the Venetian Republic in 1797 and the subsequent French and Austrian military occupations, Murano’s furnace industry entered its most catastrophic decline. The ancient glassmakers' guilds (mariegole) were forcibly dissolved, centuries of proprietary batch notebooks were burned or dispersed, and the secrets of Renaissance glassmaking—such as calcedonio (chalcedony glass), avventurina (aventurine glass), and gilded mosaic tiles—were almost entirely lost. By the 1820s, Murano had been reduced to manufacturing utilitarian pharmaceutical bottles, simple window panes, and basic trade beads.

Born into an ancient Muranese glassmaking family, Lorenzo Radi Sr. dedicated his youth to reclaiming the lost chemical heritage of the lagoon. Operating in semi-secrecy, Radi spent decades studying rare historical manuscripts, most notably Priest Antonio Neri's 1612 treatise L'Arte Vetraria and Christopher Merret's 1662 commentary.

Radi's first major breakthrough came in 1840. For centuries, the art of manufacturing gold-leaf mosaic tiles (tesserae) had been hampered by fragile, labor-intensive techniques. Radi engineered a revolutionary, durable manufacturing method: thin, delicate vesicles of colorless glass were blown, cut into small square sheets while hot, covered with genuine gold or silver leaf using a water-and-egg-white binder, and then fused directly onto thick base sheets of molten glass inside the furnace under a metal pallet. This process created indestructible, weather-resistant gold mosaic tiles capable of withstanding outdoor architectural exposure. For this monumental invention, the Istituto Veneto di Scienze, Lettere ed Arti awarded Lorenzo Radi Sr. the prestigious Gold Medal in 1840.

In 1849, Radi partnered with master artisan Francesco Torcellan to refine gilded and silvered mosaic glass compositions, winning first prize and another Gold Medal from the Istituto Veneto. However, Radi's ultimate technical triumph occurred in 1856: the successful rediscovery of Calcedonio (chalcedony glass).

Originally invented in the mid-15th century by master Angelo Barovier, calcedonio was an opaque, variegated glass batch that simulated the swirling, multi-colored veins of natural semi-precious zoned agates, jasper, chalcedony, and lapis lazuli. The chemistry was notoriously volatile: it required introducing an intricate sequence of metallic oxides—including silver nitrate, copper, iron, cobalt, and antimony—into the molten glass pot at precise intervals during the melt, preventing them from blending completely while inducing controlled chemical segregation. After years of failed trials, Radi mastered the exact thermal annealing cycle required to precipitate these metallic veins. When Radi presented his revived calcedonio vessels in 1856, the Istituto Veneto awarded him the Silver Medal, acknowledging that the lost art of the Renaissance masters had officially been restored to Murano.

In 1859, a chance encounter transformed Lorenzo Radi Sr.'s laboratory discoveries into an international industrial empire. Rather than placing individual tesserae onto wet plaster on-site in distant European cities, mosaic workers in Venice glued Radi's glass tiles face-down onto reverse paper cartoons divided into numbered sections. These sections were shipped internationally, pressed directly into fresh cement on building facades, and the paper backing was washed away with water. This process drastically reduced installation costs and execution time.

Radi's mosaic tiles powered the decoration of world-renowned architectural landmarks, including:

The display captivated British collectors, prompting Sir Henry Austen Layard and Sir William Richard Drake to invest capital into Salviati's enterprise.

In December 1866, Salviati restructured the firm with British capital, incorporating Salviati & Company Limited (later reorganized as The Venice and Murano Glass and Mosaic Company Limited / C.V.M.). As part of this corporate expansion, Layard brought in young chemist Vincenzo Moretti to head the C.V.M. glass chemistry department. Having successfully established Murano's mosaic tile production, Lorenzo Radi Sr. transitioned to independent work, eventually serving as technical advisor to the Società Musiva Veneziana alongside his son until his passing in 1874.


3. Lorenzo Radi Jr. & The Interwar Transition (1853–1928)

Following the death of Lorenzo Radi Sr. in 1874, his artistic and technical legacy passed to his son, Lorenzo Radi Jr. (1853–1928). Having trained directly under his father at the furnace bench, Lorenzo Jr. inherited the family's secret batch journals containing the precise chemical recipes for calcedonio, avventurina, and gold-leaf tile compositions.

Lorenzo Radi Jr. served for decades as Managing Director of the Società Musiva Veneziana, a premier mosaic manufactory that executed major international commissions, including the celebrated La Mandolinista panel at the 1892 Genoa Columbian Exhibition.

Beyond architectural mosaics, Lorenzo Jr. maintained a specialized workshop on Murano producing small-scale calcedonio vessels, gold-leaf paperweights, and aventurine glass inlays for luxury retailers across Europe. While Lorenzo Radi Sr. saved 19th-century Murano through historical chemistry, his grandson Giulio Radi (1895–1952) became one of the defining geniuses of 20th-century mid-century modern art glass.

Giulio Radi trained initially as a master glassblower in his father's furnace before joining the famous furnace of Andrea Rioda & C. in 1918. Upon Andrea Rioda's death in 1921, Giulio Radi joined fellow masters in founding Successori Andrea Rioda, serving as the firm's Artistic Director throughout the 1920s.

In 1932, Giulio Radi joined an elite cohort of master glassblowers—including Antonio Luigi Ferro ("Barba Gigi"), Egidio Ferro ("Pianzini"), Galliano Ferro, Emilio Nason, and Ottone Ferro—to establish Arte Vetraria Muranese (A.V.E.M.) at Fondamenta Vetrai. In 1939, Giulio Radi was appointed Artistic Director of A.V.E.M., a position he held until his untimely death in 1952.

At A.V.E.M., Giulio Radi launched a revolutionary period of material experimentation. Rejecting traditional smooth surfaces and historicist shapes, Giulio treated the molten glass vessel as a dynamic chemical reactor. Between 1938 and 1952, he developed his legendary series:

  • Reazioni Policrome (Polychrome Reactions, 1938–1952): A groundbreaking technique where sheets of genuine gold and silver foil were applied directly to an inner gather of hot glass, layered with metal oxides (copper, iron, cobalt, manganese), sulfur compounds, and multi-colored murrine cane fragments, and then cased (sommerso) inside a heavy outer layer of transparent or dark-tinted crystal. When subjected to intense furnace heat, the trapped metallic foils oxidized, boiled, and fractured into shimmering, iridized micro-grids (a reazione).
