The Nason family represents one of Murano's most prolific, technically versatile, and historically resilient glassmaking dynasties. Documented in municipal archives as early as c. 1300, the family's identity is encapsulated by the traditional Muranese proverb: "Pasta de vero dentro al serveo, questo gera i Nason!" ("Molten glass in their brains, that was the Nasons!").
In the late 18th century, Antonio Nason (b. 1769), a master glassblower working in 1789 at the furnace of Vittorio Mestre, married Antonia Ferro (daughter of Domenico Ferro). Their three sons established the three distinct genealogical branches of the modern dynasty:
In 1932, Emilio Nason (1891–1959), formerly a master blower at Vetri Soffiati Muranesi Venini & C. (c. 1925), joined Egidio Ferro ("Pianzini"), Antonio Luigi Ferro, Galliano Ferro, and chemist Giulio Radi to found Arte Vetraria Muranese (A.V.E.M.) at Fondamenta Vetrai 33.
Within A.V.E.M., Emilio Nason served as chief master blower for figurative and animal subjects. Departing from classical vessel shapes, Emilio developed a signature style of stylized, humorous human figures, Commedia dell'Arte characters, and exotic animals. Executed in opaque pasta vitrea, lattimo with gold/silver leaf, and cristallo oro, Emilio's figures—such as his 1934 Cristallo Lady supporting an A.V.E.M. exhibition sphere and his 1936 pulegoso horses—were featured prominently at the Venice Biennale.
Emilio's son, Aldo Nason (1920–2017), apprenticed under his uncle Italo "Otello" Nason before joining A.V.E.M. in 1937. Aldo became legendary on Murano as "Il re dei galli" (the king of roosters) due to his lightning-fast virtuosity in hand-shaping Murano's signature glass roosters.
Born on Murano on July 21, 1928, Ermanno Nason (son of Italo "Otello" Nason) stands as one of the most technically gifted and prolific master glassblowers and sculptors in 20th-century history.
Ermanno began working at his father's furnace, Nason & Zaniol (known as "the two Foscaris"), at the age of nine while still in elementary school. He completed the classical Muranese apprenticeship—rising from garzon to serventino to servente—working across A.V.E.M., Italo Toso, Fratelli Ferro, and Pinzan & Cimarrosti. In 1946, at just eighteen years old, Ermanno was formally proclaimed Maestro at Pinzan & Cimarrosti.
From 1953 to 1959, Ermanno Nason served as Maestro di prima piazza at I.V.R. di Mazzega (Fondamenta da Mula). During this period, Nason became the principal physical medium for Egidio Costantini's Centro Studio Pittori nell'Arte del Vetro (later named Fucina degli Angeli by Jean Cocteau in 1958). Working directly from two-dimensional sketches provided by the world's greatest avant-garde artists, Nason translated their fine-art concepts into hot-sculpted glass:
After operating independent studios (Arte E. Nason s.n.c., 1959–1962; Scarpa & Nason, 1962–1963), Nason joined Gino Cenedese & Figlio in 1964 as chief master blower. Collaborating with Artistic Director Antonio Da Ros, Nason created monumental, heavy-walled sommerso sculptures, the 1964 Mosè (Moses head in ruby/aquamarine), and a 52 cm crystal and gold lion commissioned in November 1970 for Emperor Haile Selassie of Ethiopia (who awarded Nason a pure gold medal).
In 1973, Nason reopened Vetraria Arte E. Nason s.n.c. at Calle S. Giuseppe 18/A, producing independent massello sculptures and artist collaborations (Remo Brindisi, Salvatore Fiume, Fulvio Bianconi) until a catastrophic fire destroyed the factory on February 18, 1993.
Founded on March 23, 1923, by Ugo Nason (1870–1939) and his sons (Antonio, Giuseppe, Vincenzo, Umberto) alongside the Moretti brothers (Ulderico, Pietro, Vincenzo, Germano), Cristalleria Nason & Moretti specialized in refined glass tableware and colored crystal services.
Descended from the Tonòe branch, Carlo Nason established an international reputation in post-war lighting design through his landmark partnership with AV Mazzega (A.V. Mazzega S.r.l. / Mazzega 1946, Via Vivarini 3). Carlo designed modular, opalescent, and translucent glass lighting series—such as the Planet, Dune, Ghibli, and Lotus lamps—combining Muranese blowing virtuosity with mid-century industrial elegance.
Established in 1967 as VNC Opaline de Venise (later Veritable Opaline de Murano and V. Nason & C. in 1989) by Vincenzo Nason, this furnace became one of Murano's largest producers of opaline vessels, avventurina animals, and molded art glassware, utilizing distinctive foil labels bearing the stylized square "N" logo.
